Milos Travel Guide: Adventure, Architecture, Food, and More!

This Milos Travel Guide includes everything you need to know about getting to, lodging, eating, and tourists attractions on Milos island. Milos is an incredible island to add to a island-hopping trip in the Greek islands. The waters and lavas worked their magic on this island, creating the coolest beaches and geological formations. The architecture of the local villages will not disappoint – you’ll find cubic white homes with blue accents and even rows of fisherman’s houses in every color in the rainbow. For more reasons to visit Milos, check out our blog post Milos: Greek Hidden Gem to Add to your Bucket List. In the meantime, here is everything you need to know about Milos for your next vacation.

If you’re new to our website, we like to save all our itinerary stops (and some we didn’t get to) to a Google Map we share with our readers. You can find all of our maps on our Travel Map page. For Milos, check it out below:

How to Get to Milos

Seajets Ferry at Adamantas Port in Milos

Planning a trip to the Greek islands can be a bit intimidating, especially when it comes to going between islands. We put together all of our lessons learned and tips in our post: How to Plan Your Best Greek Island Hopping Vacation.

Milos is reachable via airplane or ferry (or car + ferry). For all the tips we have on ferries in Greece, check out our post Taking a Ferry in Greece: Everything to Know. In addition, Milos has an international airport that flies direct from places such as London, Rome, and of course, Athens. You can also fly directly to/from Mykonos or Santorini. Alternatively, you can take a ferry from Athens or other island if you prefer ferry hopping. FerryHopper.com is great for ferry itineraries and tickets.

Where to Stay in Milos

If you book far enough in advance and are willing to budget ~200 euro/night, I beg you to stay in Klima. We booked this Airbnb of an old fishermanโ€™s house and it was the coolest Airbnb experience weโ€™ve ever had. You get a tourist spot as your own hotel, the most gorgeous sunset I have every seen, and a water-front stay. If you stay here, donโ€™t bring a large suitcase as you risk having to lug it through the water during high-tide. Also, donโ€™t eat at the local restaurant as it is a tourist trap.

Alternatively, the port town of Adamantas has plenty of places to stay. Firopotamos is another fishermanโ€™s house type place with beach front properties.

How to Get Around in Milos

If Milos is the smallest island on your vacation, I would take the opportunity to rent an ATV/quad. The island is pretty small and the streets are narrow, so an ATV here would be helpful. We rented a car from AutoMoto Adamas that worked fine as well. Book in advance to make sure there’s a vehicle available for your arrival!

There are also buses that take you around the island. The boat tours also offer shuttles to get you to the right port.

Where to Eat in Milos

Milos Travel Guide: food edition. Here is what we do and don’t recommend.

Klima is a popular spot for sunset. There’s also a restaurant there that many people book for a sunset dinner. We tried it and received terrible service and subpar food, so we don’t recommend eating at Astakas Cafe. Plaka and Adamantas have many more restaurants to choose from, therefore the service and food quality is 10x better.

Where to Eat in Plaka

Mavros Xoiros

We liked Mavros Xoiros because the dining room wasn’t flooding into the streets, giving the place a bit more privacy and better ambiance. The Kleftiko Lamb is a must.

Here are some other restaurants to try:

  • Avli-Milos
  • Vlahos
  • En Plo

Where to Eat in Adamantas

Volta

Volta, which is a short walk from getting on or off a ferry, was a delicious Greek restaurant for a quick bite upon entering or leaving Adamantas. The grilled salmon and Greek salad were delicious.

YANKOS

YANKOS is good for souvlaki/gyro sandwhiches. Beware, the portions are very large.

Milos Travel Guide: Itinerary

Here is a 2 to 3 day Milos travel guide itinerary to help with vacation planning:

Day 1: Adamantas + North Side of Island

  • 9-11 am: Grab a coffee and breakfast at a local cafรฉ in Adamantas. Explore the town of Adamantas. Walk up to the church and around the streets. Book a boat tour for tomorrow. Find one that takes you to Kleftiko and some other swim spots (Tsigrado beach or Gerakas beach). A half-day tour is plenty to get a solid tour of Milos via boat.
  • 11-1 pm: Head north towards the town of Pollonia for lunch. Eat lunch at a highly-rated restaurant such as Enalion. The town is pretty small so shouldnโ€™t take too long to visit.
  • 1-6:30 pm: Work your way back west and stop by:
    1. Papafagras: a beach surrounded by cliffside, donโ€™t attempt to climb down if youโ€™re not comfortable with heights. The โ€œstairsโ€ are wide enough for one person and dangerous to climb down/up.
    2. Sarakiniko beach: the rock formations look like the moon. People stop here to snorkel and lounge, but the rock doesnโ€™t look very comfortable.
    3. Firopotamos: small town with beachfront houses.
  • 6:30 pm (adjust time for sunset): Head to Klima for sunset. There is one parking lot called labelled on Google maps (check out our saved Travel Maps). From there you walk down to the shore. This place gets crowded at sunset so be prepared to get creative with parking, or come early. The streets there are also very narrow. Youโ€™ll also want some daylight to take pictures of the houses before the sun sets.
  • 7:30-8 (adjust time for sunset): Sunset in Klima
  • Have dinner in Plaka. If youโ€™re staying in Klima, eat before sunset or head back up to Plaka for dinner.

Day 2: Boat Tour + Plaka

  • Morning to mid-afternoon: Boat tour.
  • After the boat tour, head to Plaka for sunset. Park and walk into town. Climb up to Plaka Castle โ€“ the famous sunset spot near the church.
  • After sunset, eat in Plaka for dinner.

Extra Time in Milos

Add a day to explore Tsigrado Beach by land. Itโ€™s an exciting (but dangerous) hike. Spend time at the beaches in Pollonia. Or, take a full-day boat tour and shuffle around the other activities.
